I’ve been writing this blog now for almost 2 months and have had fun ranting and sharing my stories and insights. This blog was apart of a project for one of my advertising classes and as the semester comes to a close I’d like to reflect of my blogging experience. Sadly, I have to say that my blog doesn’t seem to have caught on to as many people as I would have hoped. I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who share my opinions about fluorescent lights though. Over the past two months only I received only one comment on my blog (Thanks Dr. Grow!) and only 39 views. I think I could make the numbers turn around however if I talked more about lighting on a broader scale that other people are talking and searching about. I think several of my views came from the fact that I mentioned London and Prague in a post and people do a ton of web searching for travel destinations so my blog is more likely to pop up in a search. If would talk more about specific brands of lighting, of manufacturers of lamps such as Tiffany’s my blog might come up more in searches. I utilized the tag tool religiously think that would help draw people to my blog, but alas I don’t think that really worked in the long run. I would like to continue blogging in the future, I have to say to those who write daily on a successful blog that I admire their work. It can be difficult to get a blog started and popular in cyberspace. I think it can also be a challenge to sometimes think of new things to talk about depending on your topic. I found that while I have a strong hatred to fluorescent lights, it can get a little tiring for me to just keep saying that over and over. That’s why I branched out into incandescent light as art, as a symbol, and lighting around the world. Overall I think I have a blog that has the potential to take off if I explore the possibilities a bit more. Here are some major things I took away from the project
1. Blogging is tough work, it is a challenge to know what to right and know what others will want to read. I think making your blog known, and finding readers that care about what you have to say can be the biggest challenge in the blogging world.
2. I love writing, I have to say one of my dreams has always been to write a novel and be published one day. While I doubt my book will be about a little magical light bulb man that shatters fluorescent lights, blogging is a way to continue to write and share my thoughts until I have time to really sit down and devote time into writing a book.
3. You can really find just about anything on the internet. I may be referring to the fact that I found a chicken wing shaped light bulb on the internet, but I’m also referring to the fact that the world of blogging covers a vast array of subjects. You can pretty much write and read about just about anything you’d ever want to read about. I think blogging is a great outlet for people to share their thoughts and ideas and to find others who share their views.
I hope to continue blogging in the future, and am really glad I got the chance to dedicate myself to a blog, I’ve had to set up blogs in the past, but generally they involved one or two posts and that was about it so I never got a good taste of the experience. I’ll be keeping a blog this summer about my travels in London and Prague and branding in those countries. I look forward beginning that blog, and sharing my experiences. Hopefully I will be blogging down the road here as well so keep an eye out for my next rant!
